Description

The Madu River Forest, located near Balapitiya in southwestern Sri Lanka, is a sprawling estuary and Ramsar-designated wetland of immense ecological value. A slow boat safari is the primary way to explore this tranquil maze of waterways, thick mangroves, and tiny islands. Key highlights include visiting a cinnamon plantation on an island, observing traditional fishing methods, and watching wild bird species like kingfishers and eagles. The area is also known for its "fish massage" and ancient Buddhist temples on river islands. The dry season from December to April offers the calmest waters and best wildlife viewing conditions.
